Yeah I remember when everybody had land lines and you could go up to a service line and patch in. Could hear their conversations and even make calls on their number. Not to mention that even with cordless phones you could pick them up with a scanner.

Not having encryption is plain retarded.
 
This is just more encroachment of the state into the lives of citizens

The state is highly secretive and classifies huge amounts of information dating back deacdes and yet it says citizens are not allowed any privacy

The relationship between state and citizen has always been about maintaining a power balance but the state is disrupting that balance by taking all the power away

Here's what that FBI chief wants according to that article:

He also said it’s time to update existing laws to allow for federal wiretapping over a broader set of newer Internet-based technologies.

They want to be able to snoop deeper and deeper into our lives...that's the bottom line

Apparently the 'black phone' is encrypted but i don;t know enouhg about what it can do or not do to say anymore at this stage. Might be worth a look though

Also citizens are more conscious about their privacy. Back in the day nobody worried about getting tapped but it was so easy as long as you could get access to the right place. The service box on the back of a house typically had a convenient phone jack inside meant for testing the line but even failing that, if you could get hold of a lineman's headset with the aligator clips you could splice in just about anywhere if you knew what you were doing. Phone wires are really easy to splice too since there's only a couple of them that are actually important.

Good info...i can appreciate that hardline phones had their limitations but the advancements in technology has made it easier for the state to spy on us

The revelations of various whistleblowers has told us that the state is not just gathering 'metadate' like who is contacting who and when and how they are also storing the content of your communications whether it is phone calls, emails, texts or whatever

Other NSA whistelblowers told us thius years ago but snowden was the first to come out with hard evidence that he had downloaded so the media HAD to take him seriously because wikileaks blew the story up

Now we know that as poverty remains rampant the state is choosing to spend our taxpayers money NOT on alleviating poverty and thereby stabilising society but instead it is spending it on building NSA supercomputers to store all the information they are intercepting and on private contractors they are using to do the spying

The east german police (the stasi) were notorious for having files on most of the population but the stasi had none of the technological capaibilities of the NSA and pale in comparison

The NSA has taken state intrusion to whole new unprecendented levels and here they are in the article above trying to justify what they are doing

People need to counter it with encryption even if they're not even saying anything sensitive to the government because the content of our communications is simply none of the governments business

They want to get us to an orwellian 1984 scenario where anyone who protests the government can be brought in under 'terrorism' charges and taken tio a room 101 re-education centre where they can fuck with your mind using all the infiormation they have dredged up on you from their super computer

They are control freaks and they want total control

Greedy corporations that need to know what you're doing/saying (Google), have no interest in technology that hides this information. Apple doesn't give a shit about your data. Their business model is selling devices, not data. This is why they don't want to have decryption keys for your data. They don't want your data, and now government agencies can't demand something that's not there.
