I'm watching "So you think you can dance" and just imagining how many styles of dancing there are. Has anyone here danced? What styles? What's your favorite type of dance performance to watch? Any favorite performers? Post videos if you like.

I think dancing is really beautiful way of self-expression. All kinds of different dances are cool! In their own ways.

I've only danced a little bit of ''show dance'' before which is a mix of disco, jazz, hip hop, ballet, Latin and afro dancing styles. So it's a little bit of this and that, haha. I danced it in high school for some months.
Belly dancing is something I started few years after that (had to stop it for few personal reasons, too bad...) and I absolutely loved it!! The music, the rhythm. It's sensual and made me feel more feminine and confident in my own body. Someday, I will definitely start dancing it again!

I almost started a ballet many years ago, such a pity that I didn't really start it...

There isn't any dance style which is my personal favorite over the others, I just love dance in general! But if I would have to choose, it would be either ballet or belly dancing. :)

Foxtrot is my favorite, well maybe east coast swing is my fav. Not sure.

Very eclectic. :) I've never been a dancer, but if I were to dance, I'd probably go for ones that are not too showy, so that the focus is on the foot or leg moves, such as swing, or ballroom. I think jazz is also great, and I admire the hard work that goes into prepping for hip hop and ballet. I've always been a fan of tap.

My absolute fav is 40s and 50s broadway with a little slapstick. See classic couple, Fred Astaire and Ginger Roberts below.

Gene Kelly was a genius. Dance starts at 0:55 in video below.

Lol, yeah. ^.^ It was kind of ''showy dance'' as the name even said. :D I agree... Ballet and hip hop look really hard!

Heh, cool dances! Looks like lot of fun. :) I've never tried to dance with a dance partner before. Maybe need to try salsa someday~

I want to see Swan Lake live someday. So beautiful!

I like Eastern European Folk dancing, especially group or ensemble performance.

This clip is from 1931, but is a perfect example of what I mean.

Where do I begin....

Don't laugh but I actually enjoy line dancing - it's hilariously fun when you go in a group (even more so when you haven't got a clue about the steps).

My favourite styles:

Tango

Lindy Hop Swing

Partial to a bit of Bollywood/Bhangra too

This video captures some of my favourite dances in one song...contemporary modern, foxtrot, salsa, ballet, etc

I love the work ethic and body of a hip hop video dancer. I've watched so many and it amazes me what shape their body is in, and how fit, apart from being curvy and hot, but recognizing that it takes hours of workouts, dance practice, commitment, and dedication to get that body and shape. I give them mad props.

I'm a big fan of Tutting, Gliding, Dubstep, and Hardstyle/Jumpstyle/Tecktonik dance type stuff. Classical dance can be good but I find a lot of it devoid of passion these days.

Wyote - absolutely loved watching the above freestyle - thank you. I do like a bit of pop and lock too.

Personally I love streetdance and hip hop. As a kid I took jazz ballet lessons but quit after a while because it didn't go fast enough for me. A few years later when I was in high school I started dancing again, this time hip hop/streetdance. I still think it's a shame I quit after the class got too big. I really like the this style of dance and I enjoy watching people who are very good at it.

I also like watching ballet and modern dance, but it kind of depends on my mood and the music they're dancing to. I would also like to try salsa, the tango or waltz, but as this requires physical contact between the dancers I'm too shy to take classes and dance with a stranger. Maybe later, but only with my future boyfriend then, haha!
