I don't think that it is just that he's missing a digit. If you put the first 40 binary digits in, you still don't get anything sensible: "Þ¢3C%" (assuming those special characters come through alright)

Can you link the site directly? It might be numbers (longitude/latitude or something?). You can easily encode an integer number as any-length binary (although it would still have to be divisible by 8 for a computer to understand), because a binary number is just that number in base-2.
