I dont know how it works, I dont think anyone does officially, but it is an interesting concept.

Basically you have your audio/visual senses stimulated and you get tingles/extreme relaxation. I have been watching odd videos on youtube since youtubes inception. I actually had a lot of trouble sleeping for years, and would turn to all sorts of things. I started off listening to audiobooks, then moved into hypnosis MP3s and videos, then ASMR... I get the tingles from watching videos about scalp massages, straight razor shaves, chinese folk medicine (gua sha, cupping etc) ummm and all sorts of other stuff... but now apparently there is an explosion in the ASMR community on youtube, videos on roleplay hair cuts, makeup makeovers, people playing with cotton balls etc... Eh its hard to explain. I will just post some videos and you can see for yourself what ASMR is.

ASMR = Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response

I remember hearing about this a while ago. Before I heard about it I had no idea there was actually a name for this effect, but I've definitely experienced it lots of times. I am pretty sensitive to it, most of those ASMR videos that are posted on youtube will have almost an instant effect on me. I notice the tingling first starting at the nape of my neck and working up.

Wild! I watched the first one and got a wave of chills but not the kind that you get when you're cold. Goosebumps. Hit hit me like a wave; totally unexpected. Like, the kind I get when I hear certain types of classical music. Is that what is supposed to happen? I'm not sure if what just happened to me was what was supposed to happen, but I also get that sensation if I hear a train in the distance.

I get chills from some voices and music. I got chills on my scalp from listening to two GentleWhispering's videos made using a 3D mic, regular whispering doesn't do anything for me.

Can you use the memory of these sensations to relax yourself or get those euphoric happy tingly feelings?

Yeah thats what ASMR is... I noticed these sensations happening to me all the time as a kid randomly, like getting a haircut, or watching someone cut construction paper etc, you can do it with touch as well I think, its the same sensation, like lightly draping something over your ticklish spots but not enough to tickle you. I use this stuff to help me relax and go to sleep lol.

yeah like when she goes from ear to ear? The other video I posted with the girl chewing gum really did it for me... the sound of the gum in her mouth really ASMR's me lol.

I am crazy into this...in fact, this is how I sleep at night!

Gentle Whispering and VeniVediVulpes are both superb whisperers, especially since they use binaural mics now.

However, Lilium Cadium needs some recognition:

btw, is anyone bothered by the "in your face" intimate nature of these videos? These girls are getting directly in the viewer's face and talking to them, often in an assuring way. My acquaintance thinks ASMR is all about the intimacy and calls these videos fake intimacy. I don't entirely agree, because I get triggered by sounds outside of that context, if you think about it the unpleasant chills you get from pieces of styrofoam rubbing together are the same thing, though what do you think about how much the intimacy contributes to the feeling for you?

ps. VeniVidiVulpes is creepy. It's those big, sad, soulful eyes.

The first video really got me! I got such goose bumps!
Some sounds/visuals make such an effect on me. I wish I knew how exactly it works... Jeremy Iron's voice gives me extreme goose bumps for some reason. The sound of the wind, some audio books, cat's purring, touching cotton balls, head massage. The smell of burning coal in winter but only from far away, not if I'm close. Lots of things if I start to think about it. Intimacy matters to me because it triggers these strange feelings much faster but it can also happen completely randomly with zero intimacy involved in it. However, if someone stares constantly in my face like on many of these videos... I get the disturbing kind of chills, discomfort that I have to shake off asap.

I watched another one and fell asleep right where I was on the couch. I just woke up :\

Nah its not intimacy at all. I have had these feelings triggered by all sorts of things.

Yes, I've experienced this. It's triggered by voice pitch in songs, sometimes by certain words and sometimes through meditation. It's also triggered when watching Ghost-Hunters and listening to voices captured on recording (whether it's actually real or not doesn't matter.) It usually starts from my chest, works it's way out my arms through my fingers and also up my neck through my scalp. I love getting the chills. :D
