Religion to Secular; Kate Tempest's Progress

Not too bad, I didn't know she existed before this thread. I was raised highly religious, Roman Catholic on my mom's side, Jewish on my dad's, but I've never felt a hole where that resided, as she describes. It didn't give me reason, nor knowledge. Any religion is just mankind's way of trying to make sense of this world, stories meant to try to understand our role here. I can understand the religion to secular progress here, as I grew up with Catholic school, Bible study classes, my mom teaching catechism classes, at one point an entire wall of my bedroom was floor to ceiling bookcases full of Catholic books... but I rejected and doubt all of that. I view Christian stories the same as I do Greek mythology. Just stories, pertinent to a society at a certain point in time, although weirdly some Christians still adhere to thousands-year old teachings in the Bible, even though those teachings involve archaic things like beating and killing your wife because you're not happy with her... lol. The Bible is full of... interesting and f***ed up things.

I view all religions as equally sh*tty, and I am often disappointed by the ability to still believe in antiquated crap like this, even now. You can look at history and see that people, historically and stupidly, have used religion as an excuse to slaughter countless innocent people, Christians included, and yet you can adhere to a faith that has been used to justify the murder and suffering of countless individuals? Lol, religion is weird...

I think she's a genius. Pure talent.

Also in the charts a while back

Kate Tempest "Progress"
I see this piece as a critical commentary on society and 'progress'. How we are enslaved by our beliefs. Now we take on the cult of celebrity and materialism- now that religious values are in decline.

Apologies for misunderstanding the thread, when I posted the other Kate Tempest song and poem. Lol, it's not just about her and her work.

Being religious myself (Apostolic tradition type, not scriptural fundamentalist type), my hackles are kind of stirred, because no one follows a religion because of some big yee haw to its history. Religion is about its aspiration to pursue the transcendent good and beauty. (Irrelevant nit picking on my part, but there it is).

I was interested if this kind of dreary poetry was appealing, or blah to my INFJ cousins. Even if the implicit philosophy isn't appealing to all, Tempest is a singularly unique poet/performer, and kind of captivating. Worth sharing with you all.

Her music has more edge than her spoken word poetry. I don't find it particularly inspiring but she's alright.

Agreed, she's more interesting as a poet, than as a philosopher (or religious-sociological-commentator).

I like that, unlike most rap-type artists, her material is packed with directed content; it's almost like listening to a ten minute debate speech, compressed into three minutes.

You don't listen to enough rap
Well... I probably listen to a little, before getting annoyed and switching radio stations... not much at all, but enough to know I don't find anything interesting there (popular mainstream rap).

Any alt suggestions?

I agree, I also think she has got something interesting to say and is refreshing given that a lot of the literary world is really stuffy 'Artsy' and quite frankly, boring. She on the other hand has something to say about what's going in the world, and a fresh way of saying it. Sometimes, academic very clever and 'correct' poetry is so boring I literally want to die before I finish reading the page,- and sometimes poetry is so 'clever' you wonder what they're trying to say. She, however, is not just writing from a 'clever' head but also from the heart and gut.. in my opinion.

People follow religions for all sorts of reasons, and what religion should be about isn't necessarily why everyone follows a particular religion, although I'm certainly not discounting that some do for the reasons you've described. I've seen faith save people whose lives were falling apart, and I've also seen it used as a tool to harm. It's not necessarily the religions themselves that are problematic, but when humans, flawed creatures, take those religions and misinterpret them, or use them to promote hate, to justify treating certain human beings as lesser than others, etc.

Not only can religion be used as a negative tool in the wrong hands, but it's a uniquely powerful one, one for which people have and continue to take their lives, and the lives of others. It can be a great thing, and in an ideal world would not have such potential for harm, but this is not an ideal world. I far from think anyone religious is wrong, not at all, it's religion itself and how some individuals misuse it that gets to me. I tend to be an anti-theist, but I think about and question religion all the time. I apologize if my previous post came off as overly harsh, and I do appreciate hearing other viewpoints, and discussing the subject. It's a complex matter beyond the scope of one thread, so I apologize again for blathering on.

That belongs on the Pizzagate thread... obviously a Team-Clinton upload teaser.

I did like this poet, but I'm more of a Tu-Pac guy.

Re the title of this thread, I doubt it was ever any sort of issue in the first place; 'Kate Tempest progress- Religious to Secular' ??

Anyway despite that, Kate Tempest 'Breakfast' Here it is
