Should beliefs, ideas, or ways of life, etc. only be supported if there is a clear advantage to society and/or the government?

What do you mean by supported? Financially supported, legally supported or simply accepted?

Like religion?

Theoretically, it would be nice. But that's not exactly the truth.

For the sake of support, let's say legally accepted.

It seems there are many examples of these that demonstrate no clear advantage...some may even be considered a disadvantage by many, yet they are supported/protected by law.

Examples?

I was thinking of various activist groups, non-mainstream political groups, and certain religious groups/sects. They may be suspect (in terms of the government), but they are tolerated and unhindered from raising support/members and carrying out certain actions. They may have a benefit to society...but I am sure there is no shortage of folks who would question that.

Excellent. Advocates are allowed to advocate with the legal protection of free speech, religion, press, and assembly, even if their actions are harmful to society. Hence groups like the KKK, Westboro Baptist Church, Neo Nazis, etc. are supported in this country despite how their message may deharmonize the country. In essence, every idea, belief, way of life, etc. is supported in this country regardless of whether or not it demonstrates a clear advantage to society and/or the government.

I'm sure a distinction could be made between "harmful to society" and "not having a clear advantage." ;)

You think groups like the KKK haven't been harmful to society?

Groups like this (and similar) seem to be tolerated by society (and even government) until laws are broken or civil rights are infringed upon. Illegal actions are not tolerated even though the group itself seems to continue on in some form. Just an observation...I'm no expert.

They aren't simply tolerated by society, but supported by society through protections like freedom of speech, press, assembly, and religion.

Yes, I would agree, although people in general remain wary of some groups.
