Friendly vs polite vs. nice: Are they the same?

I feel the need to add now that AKM and Stormy1, I still absolutely adore both of you! I hope you won't take me too personally... D:

This is a forum for discussion. If you don't understand where people are coming from, that's ok, and saying so is ok. (At least to me it is.) If you started saying I was stupid for my opinion, or other mean attacking things, then I would probably respond similarly, at least in my head. Yes, I can only respond as to what "I" view them as, as I feel them. No worries here :)

there is such a thing as a nice day, nice house, nice sweater etc,

Even here I wouldnt want my things to be nice. I want them to be at least good... or great... or AMAZING!

Ummmmmmmm, one has to have the same attitudes towards people and have the some sort of social skills to perform these, but especially in modern perspective, the common responce to the topic: no. :)

Those adjectives have a different meaning when you add the "being"

agree. I don't see friendly as a more natural, honest, or authentic action. It can be just as strategic as being "nice".

But swing, you are absolutely right.

BEING nice is not the same as affirming that someone IS nice.

BEING friendly is not the same as saying that someone is friendly. Someone may really be nice but not appear friendly. Or someone can be friendly but not be nice.

"Being" suggests the intent to do something for a reason, whether positive, neutral, or negative.

Friendly and nice are two words that mean the same thing. Polite means well behaved but that doesn't mean that they are nice. It has more to do with socially accepted behavior. Example: you could describe me as a friendly/nice person because I say nice things about people, I am thoughtful, etc. If I worked in a store and I helped you carry your stuff to checkout I might just be polite because of the social situation requiring that I act in a specific manner.

* Adding to that: Friendly and nice are words that we attribute to personality whereas polite has more to do with directly describing interaction with others impersonally.
