Ok, so before I became scientist I spent a few years as a marketing strategist.(For pharma. Dark days- soul- hard to give up the money tho.)

anyway- as soon as I signed up for this forum the algorithms started sending me “Depression Ads” Meds, counseling’s services etc.

that is some dark shit right there. Think it through. One of the most insidious things Pharma does is try to convince people they might be really sick. Exaggerating symptoms, suggestive messages “it’s not your fault you are not able to enjoy life, you aren’t character flawed- you have a rare genetic thing and you will become everything you wanted for the small effort of popping our pills. No other effort required.”

Gotta imagine signing up for ESTP forum it will be gambling or sex addict treatments.

Marketing is brutal and soulless. Be aware. I saw 4 or 5 ads and actually thought- wait am I depressed? Is reaching out to the ether, a depressed act of desperation??? Marketing is powerful shit. Don’t let it get you.

I agree it's good to be mindful of marketing influence, but are you really that susceptible to a few online ads?

I get dating ads! OMG insiduous.

I would say that everything is marketing. Everyone you encounter and everything is trying to sell you a belief.

Power is the ability to take an idea and have another person accept it as if it were their own idea.

It's all about power

I get them on my phone when I never did on my old one despite not having an adblocker. They're mostly books, therapy, and 'uniform dating'.

The thread did remind me of this:

When I was getting ads here they were all for dorky wolf tee shirts. Because I did buy some dorky animal shirts not too long ago lol. It's targeted based on your searches and activities isn't it? So it seems like it just reinforces whatever is put into the algorithm. Why are we ok with being watched like that? I kind of am (because I'm still here) but I'm kind of not.

Yeah, data mining! Jaron Lanier has an interesting take on this, that we should be able to sell our own data to advertisers. I think this makes a whole lot more sense than it being stolen from us.

To think there are still people browsing the net without an adblocker installed. :openmouth:

For those that use Google Chrome, it's pretty horrendous in terms of data privacy; it enables third-party trackers and cookies by default, so the websites visit know exactly who you are and what you like - potentially even the location of your mouse cursor.

Google's business model is based on ad revenue, and damn, they do a good job with this...

I've recently switched to Brave. Their business model is this: by default, they block all ads. So... how do they make money? You, as the user, can optionally enable Brave-sanctioned ads (these show up as phone/desktop notifications) and if you do, Brave pays you 70% of the ad revenue. It provides a number of knobs to control settings related to the ads, and most importantly, you're given the choice, and you're paid for the data. Google m@akes you pay with your data.

As @Aneirin indicated, duckduckgo is preferable to Google in terms of data privacy; it doesn't capture your queries or track your IP.

I think Google use some supernatural powers because I've not even searched something but thought about it, not even spoken to someone for my phone to pick up the words and the next thing you know it's advertised all over my feed :expressionless:

I'd happily switch to these browsers but i forgot my infj forum password. Also lazy.

Data mining is inevitable and it's unavoidable in the modern era. It will only get worse. They need your data for machine learning and resistance is futile.

I've always felt invincible. What could these ads possibly take from me if I don't let it? Data mining is actually fascinating.

I think everyone draws the line differently when it comes paranoia and carefulness about what information they convey.

Many/most(?) people will keep passwords, social security numbers, and bank information private. Others will be very cognizant of what they say when they text/email in case anything could be construed in an illicit or damning way. The means you use to search and communicate on the internet is similar.

I've always had a little anxiety about this. The Snowden stuff made me worry about government whistleblowing (esp if I ever took a job with the government, and I almost interviewed with the NSA years ago). The thought that pissing off the wrong person at Google could mean they'd use my data against me is a little worrying. Also, in the U.S. I've heard of at least once case in which a prosecution's was solely built on Google search results, and they were able to successfully convict someone just because they searched something illicit (without proof that they would actually do anything illicit).

I'd probably be more comfortable if I lived in a country with better data privacy laws, but post-9/11, things are pretty wide open in the U.S. in terms of what can be used against you.

As people pointed, these ads are somewhat personal, but...
But there is a general pattern of people on typology forums to be neurotic in general - and that means more anxious, more angry, more feelings of helplessness and, specially, more depressed. This is one of the best explanations about why you see people getting banned lots of times in several different forums - what appears first as rigid MODs, is actually a general pattern of forums on MBTI.

Im kind of surprised that google catchs it, and that probably means that these ADs probably even psychoanalyze our words - they probably have bots that could even type us based on writing patterns that a program can catch with some accuracy - although this could be coming from a word counter finding out the word 'depression' to be on top.

But some few researches also had detected IXFXs tendency to being a little bit more depressed than other types by default.

Also, there is no ESTP forum. In my book, there are only forums for INs plus ENTJ, INFP forum is definitely dead and ENTJ one is probably half-dead (I only accessed it, without an account, two years ago).
