Hubble measurements suggest a faster expansion rate in the modern universe than expected, based on how the universe appeared more than 13 billion years ago.

A brief recap: The universe is getting bigger every second. The space between galaxies is stretching, like dough rising in the oven. But how fast is the universe expanding? As Hubble and other telescopes seek to answer this question, they have run into an intriguing difference between what scientists predict and what they observe.

I read this the other day. Interesting stuff. I'd like to get either my FIL's or my friend's POV on this because they both worked for NASA and are both retired astrophysicists.

My theory is the other galaxies see what is going on over in the Milky Way, specifically the Orion arm of it and are leaving town as fast as they can.

Seriously though, I love this stuff, but it always leads to those questions we still cannot answer and probably never will.

You're on your way with them, aren't ya "MoonFlier?"

Only if R2D2 is my copilot and I have a backpack full of lembas bread.

Hahaha wow you are a big nerd ^_^
(Sounds hella fun tho)

"They find the conflict so confounding that they are talking about coming up with 'new physics,'incorporating perhaps some yet-to-be-discovered particle or other cosmic 'fudge factors'"

“It’s looking more and more like we’re going to need something new to explain this,” said Riess

Get ready for the Riess constant or Reiss particle that is entirely made up and used to balance some new equations in new physics

When will they just admit humans are stupid and we don't have a fucking clue?

Well, we're currently in an exciting scientific time where we have so many unknowns now on a Galactic/Universe scale. If I were a physicist of any kind, I would love this era.
We are observing massive objects beyond our reach with technology that is constantly improving, we are having exciting contradictions that challenge our current physical models.
There are so many puzzles to solve now. Let them find new constants, particles, universal laws and whatnot. I'll gladly read on the theories and discoveries they find out.

And no, humans aren't stupid. Their attempt to understand their existence, purpose and surroundings is proof of it. We could just exist, procreate and live on with out lives if we chose to.

I know man I was just in a humorous mood. I love theoretical science!

Errre... Yes and no. Can literally write a whole book on why I disagree.

While we humans have been wanting to search for answers and the truth behind the mysteries on the complexities and unknown of the universe—we can’t deny the human race is also filled with buffoons who can care less about what goes outside their bubble and more or so concentrate on greed and corruption. It’s not hard to wonder why other extraterrestrial beings don’t interact with us if there was that possibility they have already found us and observed how we are in the last century or so. Probably even earlier I could imagine.

While I would like to think that humans aren’t stupid—I honestly beg to differ. Look at how much we impacted our planet and how much political leaders put more importance on wealth rather than the well-being of others and the planet. I mean... I would be surprised if we even make it past 2100 if we don’t annihilate the human race or ruin the planet in the process.

I could honestly write a whole essay regarding this but I don’t have much time as it would literally take hours. But yeah, humanity does has it’s stupid people unfortunately. Wish I was more optimistic about that notion.

Of course, we do have our intelligent folk and those who are wanting to seek the truth and expand our awareness; so we are grateful to have those kind of people here today.

But until we find a way for interstellar travel, get our shit together on treating one another with equality and no more wars/greed, and taking care of our planet—I am afraid we have a lot to catch up on.

Humanity in the general sense is very very stupid. That part of my statement wasn’t a joke tbh and I could write that book with you lol

We have destroyed this planet and I think we should focus on fixing it (if it’s not already too late) before trying to find answers to how the planet got here in the first place. I mean that shit is very fucking interesting and I love all things cosmic but humanity is a sad fucking state of affairs and we need to focus more closer to home and how to fix that first.

Physicists aren't going to be very helpful with fixing anything concrete. They're more into theory. Best to let them sit with their calculators and telescopes. Keep them out from underfoot.

You want fixes: turn to engineers. We'll fix stuff you didn't even know was broken.

The real problem is people with the funds to fix this stuff don't want to. They're all living in the rat race of me-first and eating up science fiction pretending escape is reality.

"Hey, we'll just find another planet to move to!"
Well, guess what Jimbo, *if they ever find one suitable for us, and *if it is not a billion lifetimes away, they're not bringing you along.

There are too many fools out there still living the sci-fi fantasies.

Yeah I’m just upset with the state of humanity I guess. I understand it’s important for physicists to try to answer the mysteries of the universe and it’s something I hold close to my heart. However, I just don’t feel we don’t deserve any answers until we start respecting eachother, our planet and the place we hold in the universe itself.

I don’t know just in a “fuck you humanity” kind of mood. I’m usually very positive but yeah it upsets me...

We all know the world is in peril, humanity is filled with stupid idiots and bad intentions. Hell everyone is an idiot by definition as we all lack the knowledge and experience that everyone else has. But there are enough examples of people, organisations, groups in the world doing their best effort to improve and exchange knowledge, showing proper morality, setting proper examples in general, that's what counts.

And this seriously annoyed me...every space agency is finally doing proper effort in Space travel and they are being funded, good. We should focus on Space mining to get resources from there so we don't have to deplete the limited resources we have on Earth. The Space Agencies are not focusing now on populating other planets. Even SpaceX, even while they are promoting a Mars mission, they know this is a long term shot in regards to a feasible Space mission.

And guess what, you need Scientists to prove the theoretical concepts that are needed by engineers, without all this theory we have no tools to create the practicality. And all the practical tools used for scientific discovery will in turn be reused for actual engineering problems. And this is coming from an Engineer..I'm sorry but you really hit a nerve here, it's nothing personal (and I'm in a grumpy mood now).

Lol it’s funny how everyone ended up in a grumpy mood :tearsofjoy:
