Actually, no, I did build something (a server) around that time but not based around the above board. However with Zen 2's impending release there will be something available to upgrade to soon, so I'm excited to see what gets released for AM4 here in the next couple of months.

As some of you know, I need a new PC (well, I'll definitely set it up myself). However, opinions are divided on which built type to get, be it with CPUs, Graphics cards, etc.

My post is asking for your opinion on the latter: which brand / chipset of graphics card do you prefer? AMD or nVidia?

Well, of course it depends in the end on what CPU you have / plan on getting. In my case, it'll be a new gen Ryzen 7. But leaving CPUs aside for the moment, which is your general preference and why?

I guess this can be answered from the point of view of why I go with Nvidia although there are competent choices from both camps available these days.

For many mainstream and triple A titles any sufficiently powerful GPU would do fine as far as being able to produce 60 fps or more at a 1080p resolution with most or all graphics settings turned up to high or higher, thus so far it could go either way. For me there are two games I really care about that both do better with an Nvidia card than with a Radeon and these are N3V's Trainz 2019 and DoveTail's Train Sim World. The former uses an in-house built engine N3V themselves put together while the latter uses a customized build of Unreal 4. Trainz uses TurfFX and some other NV-specific features while Unreal 4 has been specifically optimized for Nvidia cards. So to get the most out of these games I pretty much have to go GeForce because otherwise features would be lacking (although thinking of it now it would be nice to see how things work for those running these games with a Navi Radeon) and this is on top of relatively poor optimization of the graphics engines present in both games but especially Trainz.

(Though would love to see others' points of view here.)

I build gaming PCs for myself. I've had dependable and solid performance with nVidia. That being said I know AMD has very good performance these days. I pick nVidia currently out of brand loyalty at this point. I think you can save a few bucks with AMD but I haven't quoted it out recently.

Nvidia. It's overpriced but outperforms AMD in the current series.

Though, what do you wish to do with the pc/gpu and what's the budget?

I had decided on the Navi chipset. Didn't save anything (actually I spent 2€ more), but I never had an AMD card, so might as well try it with this one.

My complete setup (including budget) has been discussed on EpiC:

So, if I get it right?:

AMD Ryzen 7 3700X Cpu
2x16GB DDR4 3600 CL14 Ram
Gigabyte Aorus X570 ELITE
AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT
be quiet! Straight Power 650W or the Corsair RMx 650 or the Cooler Master V 650 or Seasonic Focus Plus 650
2 x M2 drive

Almost. CPU, RAM and GPU are correct.

Asus TUF X-570 Plus Gaming Wifi motherboard
Forgot to order along the PSU, so I'll get one that's on stock (preferably a be quiet!)
and the drives remain as before
